Camp Birchrock Day Camp Newsletter

Greetings from Camp Birchrock!

It is that time again!  The snow has melted (hopefully for good), the weather is warming up, and we here at Camp Birchrock are planning the most amazing summer yet!

Day Camp preparations are in full swing as we draw closer to the opening day at Camp Birchrock.  Today, I finished planning and preparing the weekly themes for our 12 week long Day Camp!

So, without further ado, here are your 2010 Day Camp themes:

It’s A Jungle Out There! (June 7th - June 11th): Become one with Nature and sharpen your outdoor skills. Campers will start off the season learning about nature and the wonderful outdoors right here in our 200 acre backyard! Some of the activities this week will include nature hikes, trail blazing, outdoor cooking, lean-to’s, and refinishing/refreshing a location at Camp Birchrock (ex. repaint tables).

Out Of This World! (June 14th - June 18th): Climb aboard the Birchrock Space Shuttle as we blast off into outer space and travel to the far reaches of the universe. Our space cadets will learn about space travel, the solar system, and what it takes to be an astronaut. Included this week will also be a visit from Frank Kovac from the Kovac Planetarium in Monico!

Party in the USA (June 21st - June 25th): Get warmed up for the 4th of July weekend with watermelon-eating contests, potato sack races, and all sorts of classic patriotic-picnic holiday activities as well as learning about the history of our country and the significance of July 4th

Lights and Sirens and Trucks, OH MY! (July 5th - July 9th): This week will run concurrent with our R.E.A.D.Y. (Responding to Emergencies and Disasters with Youth) Teen Camp. Day Campers will take part in hands-on learning with local Emergency Services departments as well as learning what to do in the event of an emergency! We will also be visited by local fire, EMS, and police departments, including a visit from the Spirit Medical Helicopter!

We’ve Got Game! (July 12th - July 16th):  You'll spend your time playing sports and games, both classic and crazy! Challenge yourself to compete in everything; from some good old-fashioned kickball, to a rousing game of water balloons, capture the flag, and everything in between!

ARRRR Matey! (July 19th - July 23rd):  A week of bad pirate jokes, horrible pirate accents, fun costumes and a wide range of water activities! We will enjoy activities such as learning about boating/water safety, learning about invasive species, find buried treasures, and have pirate ship battles right on our lake!

Christmas in July (July 26th - July 30th):  Let’s hope that even though we’re in the Northwoods, it won’t still feel like the Holiday Season outside! Some activities this week include building a camp man (snow man out of things found in camp), Secret staff/secret friend (camp version of secret Santa), creating bird feeders/toad homes to help the wildlife survive the long winter and Create your own bubble printed wrapping paper (mix dish soap, water and powdered paint then blow it at card stock or water color paper with bubble wands)

Adventures in Campalot (August 2nd - August 6th):  Knights, Princesses, Dragons, Castles, and potions galore! Camp Birchrock will be transformed in to Castle Campalot! A small hint at this week’s activities include building castles (lean-to’s) and then shooting catapults (water balloons)!

Thinkin’ Green (August 9th - August 13th):  This earth-friendly week will get campers thinking green! We will be learning how to reduce, reuse, and recycle to prove that even small steps can do a lot to help our environment. Together, we can change the world!

Birchrock Chef Challenge (August 16th - August 20th):  Our aspiring chefs will learn a variety of cooking skills to use for a lifetime as we become familiar with kitchen utensils, measuring, following recipes, nutrition, and kitchen safety. Then, we will put our skills to the test by creating recipes and making our own edible masterpieces. We will end our week with a picnic enjoying tasty creations to share with our camper’s families!

Get Your Groove On! (August 23rd - August 27th):  Travel through the decades as we feel the music, make the art, play the games, and learn the American culture of the 20th century. Our Director (who is also a 10 year veteran DJ) will also host a dance party to show off all we learned at the end of the week!

Those Wacky, Zany Kids! (August 30th - September 3rd):  Camp is drawing to an end, and we will go out in style! The Grand Finale will be packed with exciting performances by each group. Campers will shine as they show off their new talents in front of their family and friends.

There will be more posted about the weeks as we approach the start of the season!
